Many proponents of vegetarian diets for mankind have cited a basic evil involved in killing our
brothers, the mammals, birds and fish of the world, so that we might eat their flesh. Although we
must accord this opinion a measure of respect, it is hard to ignore the naiveté revealed in such a
belief.
Have they not observed the world as it is? Predation is widespread; even some plants consume
animals, chiefly insects. Without predation, the wild herds of the world would quickly
overpopulate their ranges and starve to death.
Early in the twentieth century, on the Kaibab Plateau north of the Grand Canyon, a
well-meaning effort to improve life for the deer herd there led to catastrophe. Elimination of all
deer hunting by humans, as well as the extermination of all of the mountain lions, bobcats and
wolves caused the population of the herd to mushroom from six or seven thousand to over one
hundred thousand.
Many of us have seen the pathetic pictures of deer standing on their hindlegs and reaching up as
high as they could to nibble the lowest leaves remaining on the ravaged trees. Many deer starved
to death before this experiment was abandoned.
